Assisting in Rehabilitation

In addition to chronic pain management, virtual reality has also been shown

to be highly effective in the rehabilitation of people with compromised mobility due to an injury.

By creating a scenario in which a person utilizes their virtual limbs in a normal way, the process of rehabilitation is enhanced while reducing the risk of further injury and pain. Damaged neurocircuitry (the natural programming that moves the muscles) can be rebuilt by watching yourself (or a virtual version of yourself) move. This process is known as "neural grooving" and can even result in acquiring a skill like playing an instrument. According to Dr. Jeffrey Gold, director of the Pediatric Pain Management Clinic at the Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles, "If the brain can witness the body doing something, it believes [the body is actually] doing it.”
